Message from the CEO – January 2021

Cardinal Innovations Healthcare — enero 27, 2021
Happy New Year!

I hope that each of you has safely entered into 2021. As we head into this new year, perhaps more than ever, I am excited about the way forward – towards all the opportunities that come with fresh starts, resets and new beginnings. Looking back at the last 12 months is not easy to do – there were hard times for everyone. But there were new partnerships, creative solutions and, most importantly, lessons learned.

To that end, we recently released our 2020 Impact Report, where we reflect on the activities of the last year. My favorite thing about this report is that it gives us a chance to take an honest look at what we are doing well, and where we can listen, be more flexible, and find new opportunities and approaches. For our members, we found new opportunities to personalize care. For our communities, we had a swift and impactful response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and we were able to support our providers to ensure the network remained viable – even through a rocky time. We’ve been able to expand our network with a focus on child welfare and appreciate the partnership and creativity that have come forward through our provider groups. A few report highlights include:
  • An increase in spending on member care - $40M increase from last year.
  • A reduction in spending on administrative costs - $13M decrease from last year (that’s a drop from 9.1% of total revenue to 7.2%).
  • $44.6 Million provided for COVID-19 relief efforts.
  • A focus on Right Care, Right Time, Right Place initiatives, particularly the 25% decrease in Emergency Department utilization from the outreach initiative and the launch of our **ASK crisis line, which received more than 2,000 calls in the first three months.
  • Increased efforts around Latino Outreach, where we more than doubled our efforts to reach this population, resulting in more awareness of services and access to care, along with a 223% increase in Spanish speaking visitors to our website.
In the spirit of moving forward, both Cardinal Innovations and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) are changing the way that we think about healthcare. The changes coming with Medicaid Transformation will allow us to take care of the whole person – connecting the mind with the body and the individual to the environment and community they live in. This is a big deal, and we know our members will benefit from this future shift in how we approach care delivery. Even as things change – we will always focus on supporting our members and communities on their bad days, and celebrating with them on their good days. For all information on the transition to integrated care in North Carolina, visit NC DHHS

We continue to deliver on our County Action Plan – doubling down on our commitment and focus to how we connect members to care, partner with our provider community, and make deeper connections and relationships throughout our 20 counties. While there is a heavy focus on child welfare interactions, there are several areas of the plan that strengthen our outreach and education approach for the Intellectual and Developmental Disability communities. I encourage you to track our progress by visiting our County Action Plan website.

I’ll wrap today with a quick ask to help us fill a Board of Directors seat. As we continue our mission to improve the health and wellness of our members and their families, we are searching for potential candidates to join our Board of Directors. This seat is required by statute – and the candidate must reside in one of our 20 counties and needs to have health care expertise and experience in the fields of mental health, intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, or substance use disorders. The search will conclude on February 12th – if you or someone you know is interested, I encourage you to visit our website to learn more.

Always forward,

Trey Sutten
